Back at the F8 event in September 2011, the Facebook timeline feature was announced to the world. It is a new profile page that properly organizes the pieces of your life shared on Facebook. Eventually on December 15, 2011, Facebook rolled out the awesome feature to the world. People have said good, bad and ugly things about this new feature. Unfortunately, it will become compulsory for everybody very soon.
Facebook Timeline Feature

Facebook Timeline Feature: The Good
Several people have described the Facebook timeline as really awesome.
Magazine-like Appearance: The timeline separates your posts per month, so visitors can view your earlier posts at the click of the mouse. That means they can run through your entire life in a jiffy.
Large Cover Photo: The large ‘cover photo’ at the top of the page is a very impressive addition. It makes every profile page unique and classy depending on the creativity of the owner. You can even decide to feature a previous picture from your albums as your ‘cover photo’.
Privacy Solutions (Activity Log Control): Your activity log is a single page that sorts all your life on Facebook by dates. It is where you can choose the specific people that are allowed to view certain posts. So, you have the option of deleting a post or hiding it from your timeline if you think it will infringe on your privacy.
Support to iPhone App: Facebook has released the necessary update (version 4.1) to its iPhone app, so that you can now access Facebook timeline from the application. Before now, Facebook timeline could only be accessed via their mobile site. You can download the app for free at Apple App Store. The new v4.1 app presently works on both iPhone and iPod touch.
Feature Old Posts: You are allowed to feature your former posts on your timeline. All you have to do is hover around the top right hand corner of the post, click on the star icon that appears, and it will immediately show in your timeline.
Facebook Timeline Feature: The Bad
Here are some things you should know before activating the Facebook timeline feature.
Seven Days: As soon as you activate your timeline, you are given only seven days to assess the timeline and make relevant adjustments before it will be automatically available to every other person. If you forget or refuse to remove private information and posts, the new timeline will replace your old profile; and the whole world will get access to the information in just seven days of activating the timeline.
Facebook Timeline May Become Compulsory: Getting Facebook timeline is till voluntary; rumors reveal that it will soon become compulsory for everybody.
Facebook Timeline Feature: The Ugly
Aside the great features to admire, there are things to fear as you activate the Facebook timeline feature.
Your Past Will Breathe Again: Because your old photos and information will suddenly become available to visitors, you may be revealing sensitive things from the past. You have to urgently take precautionary privacy measures, or else you can become naked to the world.
More Intrusion into Your Life: The timeline makes unsuspecting users add more personal information voluntarily. For Facebook, it means more personalized ads and therefore more money; but for users, it means less privacy (depending on your personal definition of privacy). However since everything on the page will be written and set by you, you can decide how much of yourself you want the world to know.
Advice
Take your one week of grace to understand how the timeline operates. After editing your timeline, check what others will be able to see about you. You can also enter the name of any of your Facebook friend to see how your page will appear to that person.
Your cover photo will do a lot of talking. So ensure you have the right photo, possibly a picture of nature, a place and an important event. Bear in mind that pictures that look like adverts are not allowed.
