Finally, Facebook timeline has gone live. As expected, the upgraded Facebook profile page has been greeted with varied reactions. Already, some people are asking if it is really possible to remove Facebook timeline.
In a previous article, we have discussed whether Facebook timeline is compulsory or not. Unfortunately, timeline has finally gone live and is compulsory for everyone. So, first determine which group you fall and see if you really want to remove Facebook timeline.
Which Group Do You Fall?
A good number of people have adopted the timeline. These are the early adopters; this group of people are now concerned about getting beautiful ‘cover photo’, using Facebook timeline for business, etc.
There is another group – the hyperactive haters of Facebook timeline – who have immediately deleted their Facebook account without seeking any solution. These people believe their rights have been slighted by the magnitude of the change.
Lastly, there is a group of people who are seriously bothered about how much the timeline exposes the minutest details of everyday and easily reveals their past. These people have retained their Facebook account and are desperately looking for a way to remove Facebook timeline and revert to the old profile.
If you are part of this last group and feel like removing Facebook timeline altogether, the first thing you should know is that you cannot remove the timeline at the moment, and you may have to get used to it. However, there are things you can do to use the timeline without getting burned.
Manage Your Timeline
The option you are left with is to properly manage your timeline. The good thing about all these changes is that you can always return and make alterations to your previous posts. You can change the audience, hide posts or totally delete posts. Secondly on your Privacy Page, you can turn on Profile Review under How Tags Work to choose if the posts you’re tagged in appear in your timeline. In addition, privacy settings now appear right next to the things you share (by hovering over the post), and you do not have to go far to manage your timeline.
Remove Events You Don’t Want to See
If things like breakups, sorrowful photos, offensive posts or other “untoward” old status updates appear in your timeline, you can easily remove them from your Facebook timeline. Scroll over to “View Activity” on top of your timeline. It will take you to a more simple view of the page; there you have options to filter your results. When you get to a post you don’t like, click the arrow in front of it and either hide it or delete it totally from your profile.
Alternatively if the post you wish to hide or delete is right there in front of you in your timeline, just hover over the story and click the pencil button that appears at the right hand corner of the post. Then select “Hide from Timeline” or “Delete Post” depending on what you want.
Manage Your Audience
You can also manage the audience of many posts at once or manage your posts individually. To individually change the audience of your posts, go to the post you want to change and choose a different audience using the buttons that appear when you hover over the post. To limit the contents of your timeline that were previously shared with the public to friends alone, go over to your Privacy Settings and select Limit Old Posts.
So technically, you cannot remove Facebook timeline. However, the available privacy settings are enough to allay your fears.
