Twitter provides Verified Badge to get a Twitter account verified. The Verified Badge is the ultimate authentication of the author of tweets. Twitter uses the status symbol to help users limit confusion over the real tweeter and trust legitimate tweets. This is especially important for celebrities, public figures and politicians who are often impersonated on the Web.
How to Recognize a Verified Account
Verified Twitter accounts are easily recognized by the presence of a Verified Badge in the top-right portion of the user’s profile page. The badge appears above the name, location and bio of the person. Verified Badge can also appear in front of the user’s name in Twitter search results.
However, there are illegitimate verification symbols (not recognized by Twitter) that are intentionally created by users, for example badges that appear on avatars or page backgrounds do not indicate that the account is verified by Twitter.
Unfortunately, verification of Twitter accounts is not available to the public at the moment. Twitter currently verifies trusted sources including advertisers and partners alone. Nonetheless, individuals with legitimate reasons who have over 100, 000 followers are also allowed to get their Twitter accounts verified in some cases.
How to Verify a Twitter Account
If you are very popular or impersonating you on Twitter can cause terrible damages, you need to consider getting your Twitter account verified to help your followers differentiate you as the authentic tweeter.
The easiest way to verify your Twitter account is by linking your official website to your Twitter profile.
Visit Twitter Buttons in your browser, and select the button that appeals to you. Click on the button and copy the corresponding HTML code. Then, go over to your website and paste the code into the correct section in your website source code. If you already have a Twitter button on your website, you need to read their Trademark Policy to be sure you have complied with relevant policies.
After this, you can send a message requesting for the verification of your account. In your message, you should include your full name, account name, location, official website, bio and any other relevant information like a contact person’s name. In case of any delay, you can send a follow-up mail.
If you are unable to verify your Twitter account and still have problems of impersonation, Twitter advises to file a ticket and not put a fake verification symbol.
